Me too
I came across this article when researching the idea that as a dyslexic English teacher I was not alone. Originally a drama graduate, I trained to teach drama to A-level students but along the way I have veered towards secondary English and am now, six years later, fully fledged. I, of course, carry a dark secret; one I have never revealed until now. I have often questioned if it is ethically right for someone like me to be teaching our nation's darlings but have this terrible dilemma in that I am actually quite good at what I do! I avoid the whiteboard but, lucky me, I have a computer and projector. I plan in detail my lessons, powerpointing where possible, and try out ever more creative ways to help students to annotate poetry themselves. I rehearse chapters of books before having to read out aloud in class and rehearse difficult words. I am sure there must be others hiding away at the back of staff rooms waiting for the day when it is publicly acceptable to say "I am dyslexic ok!"
